Patellafemoral Pain Syndrome

People who have Patellafemoral Pain Syndrome experience pain at the front of their knee. A common injury in sports people, it is sometimes referred to as 'Jumper's Knee' or 'Runner's Knee', although these terms are more correctly attributed to Jumper's Knee (Patella Tendinopathy) and Iliotibial Band Syndrome - ITB (Runners Knee)

What is Patellafemoral Pain Syndrome?

Patellafemoral Pain Syndrome is characterized by moderate to severe pain along the anterior aspect of the knee due to the wearing down or softening of the soft cartilage present under the kneecap. It is a functional diagnosis, often linked to other injuries such as Patella Tendinopathy and Iliotibal Band Syndrome, and focuses on how tightness or dysfunction in muscles such as the hamstring and quadricep, can result in dysfunction in how the patella, femur and tibia work together as a 'hinge' joint and thust cause pain in the front of the knee.
