Knee Arthritis (OA)

Knee Arthritis refers to biochemical changes in the knee joint. While there are numerous types of arthritis, the most common type of Knee Arthritis is Osteoarthritis, followed by Rheumatoid Arthritis and Posttraumatic Arthritis. 

What is Knee Arthritis?

Knee Arthritis is the inflammation of the knee joint. The most common type of Knee Arthritis is Osteoarthritis, which is also known as Degenerative Joint Disease or 'Wear-and-tear arthritis.' It is a condition where the cartilage between the joint wears away, resulting in the bones rubbing against one another.

Signs and Symptoms of Knee Arthritis (OA)

Common symptoms of Knee Arthritis (OA) include: 

  • knee pain that flares up when active, although may get better when resting
  • swelling
  • feeling of warmth in the joint
  • stiffness in the knee, especially in the morning, or after sitting for extended periods
  • decreased mobility of the knee 
  • creaking, crackly sound when the knee moves

Causes of Knee Arthritis (OA)

The most common cause of Knee Arthritis (OA) is age. Other causes/risk factors include:

  • Weight
  • Heredity
  • Gender - women over 55yrs and older are more likely to develop Knee Arthritis (OA)
  • Repetitive stress injuries
  • Athletics
  • Other illnesses, eg some metabolic disorders, rheumatoid arthritis
