Bursitis Knee
Bursitis of the knee occurs when the bursa of the knee becomes swollen and inflamed. There are different types of Bursitis Knee, depending on which bursa is affected.
What is Bursitis Knee?
The bursa in the knee are small, jelly-like sacs that help cushion and reduce friction between the knee and other surrounding structures. When these bursa become inflamed, this is called Bursitis. In the knee, there are a few different types of Bursitis Knee that can occur:
- Prepatellar Bursitis - this affects the bursa in the front of the knee cap, and is also called 'Housemaids Knee'
- Infrapatellar Bursitis - this affects the bursa below the knee cap
- Suprapatellar Bursitis - this affects the bursa above the knee cap, between the femur and quadriceps tendon
- Pes Anserine Bursitis - this affects the bursa between the shinbone and three tendons of the hamstring inside the knee

Causes of Bursitis Knee
Causes of Bursitis Knee can vary slightly dependent on the type of Bursitis. Some common causes and risk factors are:
- Frequent, recurring pressure or stress to the area due to activities such as kneeling or jumping
- A direct blow or injury to the knee
- A bacterial infection to the knee
- Underlying condition, such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis or gout
- Obesity (particularly Pes Anserine Bursitis)
