Osgood Schlatter Disease

Osgood Schlatter Disease (also known as Growing Pains Knee) comprises of a multitude of symptoms that are characterized by the appearance of lumps below the knee cap. This condition is mostly seen in children. Due to unexplained reasons, the symptoms are reported more frequently in males (especially those who are active in sports related activities). The current prevalence of Osgood Schlatter Disease is 21% in certain age groups.

What is Osgood Schlatter Disease?

Osgood Schlatter Disease is a condition that happens when a tendon in the knee (the patellar tendon) pulls against the top of the shinbone. This causes pain in the knee and the upper shin.

A hard bump may also grow right below the knee as the growth plate hardens. People with Osgood Schlatter Disease usually get better with rest, over-the-counter pain medication and time.

Signs and Symptoms of Osgood Schlatter Disease

Most patients with this condition presents with moderate to severe pain and discomfort (the intensity of pain varies from patient to patient). In addition, patients may experience difficulty in continuing normal day to day operations due to discomfort.

Causes of Osgood Schlatter Disease

Primary pathophysiological factors that may lead to Osgood-Schlatter’s disease are:

  • Increased physical activities such as running, pulling, jumping
  • Pulling of quadriceps
  • Application of stress over knee cap
  • Bone structure disorders

Certain risk factors that may increase your chances of developing Osgood-Schlatter’s disease are:

  • Age is considered as one of the risk factor in causing in this disease, boys of age 13 -14 years are more likely to have this disease
  • Gender is also a risk factor as this condition is more common in males
  • Persons who are highly active in sports are at much higher risk.
