Patella Dislocation
Patella Dislocation (also known as patella subluxation, kneecap dislocation or patella instability) occurs when the kneecap is shifted out of alignment. Even if the kneecap slips back into place, it can cause pain and swelling in the knee.
Definition of Condition Title
The patella is the knee cap which is present over the knee. If this patella is shifted or mobilized from its anatomical position, then the condition is referred to as Patella Dislocation. It is mostly associated with the athletes, and results in severe pain and swelling of the knee cap.

Signs and Symptoms of Patella Dislocation
Most patients of patellar dislocation presents with swelling, moderate to severe pain (until the dislocation is corrected), discoloration of skin and instability of knee movement.
Causes of Patella Dislocation
Most common causes of patellar dislocation are,
- Sudden stress, pressure or strain while performing active sports related injuries
- Sudden twisting of knee or knee muscles
- A direct blow to knee
- Strain over knee
Certain risk factors that may increase the risk of patellar dislocation are: sports activities, direct trauma, accidents, fractures and obesity.
