Osteochondritis Dissecans

Osteochondritis Dissecans is a condition characterized by the loss of the bone from its attached cartilage. It can affect any joint but the most affected site for osteochondritis dissecans is the knee joint.

What is Osteochondritis Dissecans?

Osteochondritis Dissecans occurs when a small segment of bone begins to separate from its surrounding region due to a lack of blood supply. As a result, the small piece of bone and the cartilage covering it begin to crack and loosen. The most common part of the body for Osteochondritis Dissecan to occur is in the knee at the end of the femur.

Signs and Symptoms of Osteochondritis Dissecans

The associated symptoms of Osteochondritis Dissecans are:

  • Pain while performing active physical activities
  • Popping sensation in the joint
  • Joint locking
  • Weakness of joint
  • Limited range of motion
  • Tenderness

Causes of Osteochondritis Dissecans

Osteochondritis Dissecans is mostly reported in males. It is to be noted that the exact cause of this condition is still not known; however some factors that may contribute to the pathogenesis of this condition are:

  • reduced blood flow due to inflammation, injuries or circulatory deficits,
  • genetic factors and
  • traumatic assaults.

Certain risk factors that may increase the risk of developing Osteochondritis Dissecans are; individuals between age 10 and 20 years, male gender and active involvement in sports related activities.
