Trochanteric Bursitis

Trochanteric Bursitis (also known as Greater Trochanteric Pain Syndrome) is a painful hip condition, which affects the outer point of the thighbone, the femur, at the edge of the hip. This bony point is called the Greater Trochanter, and can become inflamed due to a number of repetitive activities.

Definition of Trochanteric Bursitis

The lateral bony point of the hip is known as trochanter. Due to sensitive positioning and critical importance of hip joint, trochanter is supported by bursae (the fluid filled sac that act as shock absorber to prevent direct injury to the greater trochanter of hip joint). However, due to wear and tear changes and chronic exposure to pressure, the bursa may undergo inflammatory response leading to trochanteric bursitis.

Signs and Symptoms of Trochanteric Bursitis

Trochanteric Bursitis may present as pain over the buttocks, hips and thighs. Other signs that are suggestive of an ongoing inflammatory process are:

  • Pain sensations when the persons sits on affected site
  • Pain when the hip is compressed
  • Pain while sitting and walking

Causes of Trochanteric Bursitis

The risk of trochanteric bursitis increases with direct injury or assault on the hip joint, improper sitting posture, chronic health issues and overuse muscle injuries (during exercise or sports related activities) and physiological aging.

Statistics and Epidemiology related to Trochanteric Bursitis

According to a new study (1), the prevalence of trochanteric bursitis in Australian population is 1.8 cases per 1000 individuals.
