FAI - Femoralacetabular Impingement

The disturbing symptoms of Femoralacetebular Impingement (FAI) are caused by premature osteoarthritis of the hip joint. The pathophysiology of this condition revolves around a disparity in the size or articulation of the hip bone (pelvic cavity) and the ball of femur (the thigh bone. Due to inefficient alignment, a force of friction is produced, between the hip bone and femur that leads to pain, stiffness and other signs of inflammation.

What is FAI - Femoralacetebular Impingement?

The two types of FAI - Femoralacetebular Impingement include,

  1. Pincer impingement: A condition in which an extra bone protrudes over the acetabular rim, leading to destruction of labrum.
  2. Cam impingement: In this condition, the rotation of the hip is compromised due to abnormality in the femoral head. A bump may be visible on the exterior surface.
