Perthes Disease
Perthes Disease or Legg-Calve-Perthes Disease is a rare hip condition that affects children.
Definition of Perthes Disease
Perthes Disease affects the ball joint of the femur, wherein the blood supply to the hip is cut off, and the bone begins to die (also known as avascular necrosis). The affected part becomes flat and deformed, and is at risk of breaking away from the hip.
There are various stages of Perthes Disease:
- Initial phase
- Fragmentation phase
- Reossification phase
- Healing phase

Causes of Perthes Disease
The actual cause of Perthes Disease is unknown. Those most likely to be affected are:
- male (four times more likely to happen in boys than girls)
- between ages 4-10years
- have a family history of Perthes Disease
- are Caucasian
