Hip Replacement
A hip replacement is a commonly performed elective surgery. It is usually for people with hip pain, when medication, changes in lifestyle and walking supports do not adequately alleviate any symptoms. It is therefore important to explore all options pre-surgery, as well as having the best pre- and post-surgery rehabilitation.
What is a Hip Replacement?
A Hip Replacement, or Hip Arthroplasty, is a surgical procedure in which part of or the total hip is replaced by a man-made implant (prosthesis). This is done to improve the function and mobility of the hip joint.
A conservative time-line is:
- Approximately 1-3 days for the surgery and physical therapy
- 3 weeks of rest and tailored exercises, including physical therapy and rehabilitation to build strength, balance, movement and flexibility
- At 4-6 weeks, light daily activities should be doable, with home exercise program and continued regular physical rehabilitation
- After 3mths, all daily activities should be doable, as well as light exercise, with regular physical rehabilitation
