Hip Flexor Pain
The hip flexors are a group of muscles located near the hip. When these muscles are injured, this can cause hip flexor pain.
What is Hip Flexor Pain?
The hip flexors include the following muscles:
- the iliacus and psoas major muscles, also known as your iliopsoas
- the rectus femoris, which is part of your quadriceps
These muscles can easily be strained due to overuse.

Hip Flexor Pain often presents as pain at the front of the hip. Other symptoms may include:
Causes of Hip Flexor Pain
Most Hip Flexor Pain is caused through the overuse of the muscles. There are activities where this is more likely to happen, including:
- dancing
- martial arts
- cycling
- soccer and football
Athletes that tend to jump or run whilst performing high kicks tend to be of greater risk of hip flexor pain. Over-stretching the muscle can also be a concern.
