Torn Calf Muscle

Calf pain felt in your calf muscle belly is often the result of a pulled or Torn Calf Muscle. While it may feel similar to an Achilles Tendon Rupture, Achilles Tendinopathy, cramps or sciatica, the pain in the middle of the calf will most likely confirm that it is a Torn Calf Muscle.

What is a Torn Calf Muscle?

A Torn Calf Muscle is an overuse injury where one of the muscles of the calf is pulled hard enough, that it tears. It can be any of the different calf muscles, including the lateral gastrocnemius, soleus, plantaris or flexor hallucis longus. The most common area of Torn Calf Muscle is the medial gastrocnemius. Torn Calf Muscle can be categorized into three grades of severity:

  • Grade one calf muscle tears result from mild overstretching, resulting in small micro-tears in the fibres of the calf muscle.
  • Grade two calf muscle tears result in partial tearing of your muscle fibres.
  • A grade three calf tear is the most severe calf strain with a complete tearing or rupture of your calf muscle fibres
