Stress Fractures Foot and Ankle

Stress Fractures in the Foot and Ankle are small breaks in a bone, or severe bruising of a bone. These are usually overuse injuries, and can occur over time.

What are Stress Fractures to Foot and Ankle?

Tiny cracks can occur in a bone due to overuse. These stress fractures commonly occur in the Foot and Ankle, as these are areas where there is a lot of pressure and impact during various activities, like running and jumping.

Typically, Stress Fractures in the Foot and Ankle occur most often in the second and third metatarsals of the foot, as they are thinner and longer than the first metatarsal, and are the area of greatest impact when walking and running.

Other common areas of Stress Fractures are the calcaneus (heel), fibula (the outer bone of the lower leg and ankle), talus (a small bone in the ankle joint), and the navicular (a bone on the top of the midfoot).
