Compartment Syndrome

Compartment syndrome is a painful condition, with muscle pressure reaching dangerous levels. Acute compartment syndrome is a medical emergency, usually caused by trauma. Chronic (or exertional) compartment syndrome is caused by intense, repetitive exercise and usually stops with rest or changes in routine.

What is Compartment Syndrome?

Compartment Syndrome is a serious condition that is marked by the buildup of excessive pressure in the connective tissue components of the body; thereby leading to edema, swelling and inflammation of nerves, blood vessels and other contents of the connective tissue tunnel/ space. The increase in pressure affects the flow of blood in the affected area and compromises the circulatory pressure

Signs and Symptoms of Compartment Syndrome

Compartment syndrome is presented with symptoms like

  • persistent ache in the affected area
  • increase in the intensity of pain when some pressure is applied
  • appearance of bruising with swelling

Causes of Compartment Syndrome

Most cases of compartment syndrome are reported after serious bleeding or crushing injuries. Most frequently reported causes of compartment syndrome are:

  • Serious burns over the body
  • Application of highly compressed bandages
  • Formation of emboli or thrombus
  • Vigorous exercises

Some of the associated risk factors that may aggravate the chances of developing compartment syndrome are:

  • Serious traumas and accidents
  • Bleeding problems
  • Athletes
  • Persons who performs strenuous activities
