Sprained Ankle
A Sprained Ankle occurs when the strong ligaments that support the ankle stretch beyond their limits and tear. Sprained Ankles are common injuries that occur among people of all ages. They range from mild to severe, depending upon how much damage there is to the ligaments.
What is a Sprained Ankle?
This condition is characterized by the twisting of ankle that may pose excessive strain or pressure on the ligaments that surrounds the ankle joint. The resultant effect is rupture or damage to the delicate fibers of ankle ligaments.
The most frequently injured ligament in a Sprained ankle are the ankle’s lateral ligaments are on the outside (lateral aspect). These include the:
- anterior talofibular ligament (ATFL)
- calcaneofibular ligament (CFL)
- posterior talofibular ligament (PTFL)
The main medial (inside of the ankle) ligament is the much stronger deltoid ligament.
High ankle sprains involve the inferior tibiofibular ligament and syndesmosis. These are more disabling ankle injuries.

Signs and Symptoms of Sprained Ankle
Sprained Ankle can present as:
Causes of Sprained Ankle
Some pathophysiological events that may lead to ankle sprain are:
- Excessive Inversion: Forceful movement of ankle towards the medial or inner aspect of the leg may lead to the stretching of ligaments that supports the ankle.
- Eversion: Likewise, forceful excessive movement of ankle in the outer or lateral aspect of leg can lead to stretching or damage to the opposing group of ligaments; thereby leading to damage to ankle connective tissue complex.
Some of the associated risk factors that may aggravate the risk of ankle sprain are:
- positive personal or family history of arthritis and osteoarthritis
- obesity
- positive history of accidents and injuries.
