Mortons Neuroma

Mortons Neuroma (also known as intermetatarsal neuroma) is not a tumor. Rather, it is a thickening of tissue between the toes, which can then press on the nerve and cause pain.

What is Mortons Neuroma

Mortons Neuroma is a peroneal fibrosis, which is the scar tissue that forms when the sheath surrounding the nerve becomes irritated and inflamed. In Mortons Neuroma, this most commonly occurs between the third and fourth toes, but can also appear between the second and third toes.

Signs and Symptoms of Mortons Neuroma

Mortons Neuroma can be asymptomatic. Some common signs and symptoms of Mortons Neuroma include:

  • tingling or pins and needles between the toes
  • shooting pains around the ball of foot or base of the toes
  • feeling like there is a 'pebble in your shoe'
  • sensation of burning or feeling numb in toes
  • discomfort worse with shoes on, especially tight shoes
  • pain decreases at night

Causes of Mortons Neuroma

There are a number of risk factors that can cause or exacerbate Mortons Neuroma. These include:

  • Shoe choice: High heels, tight-fitting, narrow or pointed-toe shoes, can put pressure on your toes or the ball of your foot and increase the risk of irritation
  • Foot shape: people born with Flat Feet, high arches or toes in an unusual position can be at risk for Mortons Neuroma, due to instability around the toe joints
  • Certain conditions: Mortons Neuroma has been linked to conditions like Bunions and hammertoes
  • Sports: High-impact activities such as running or tennis can put pressure on the ball of the foot. This is also true for sports such as rock-climbing and skiing, where tight-fitting shoes can increase the pressure and limit toe movement.
