Ankle Ligament Injuries
Ankle Ligament Injuries are injuries to bands of connective tissue around the outside of the ankle. This usually happens when the ankle is suddenly or forcefully twisted in an uncontrolled manner.
What are Ankle Ligament Injuries?
The ankle is an example of hinge joint which is present between the feet and joint, it allows the movement of foot and its rotation. Ankle consists of two types of ligaments; which are classified as superficial and deep. Technically, deep ligament are more important for activity. Forceful or excessive inversion of the foot is responsible for more than 40% of all the foot related injuries in the clinical practice.
Most frequently reported ankle and foot ligament injuries in clinical practice are discussed as under:
Anterior Talo-Fibular Ligament Injury: This injury is common in athletes and physically dynamic individuals. The anterior talo-fibular ligaments tear or rupture produces characteristic pain and discomfort of the foot that aggravates with activity or motion. In clinical practice, anterior talo-fibular ligament injury is reported in the forceful foot inversion of a plantar-flexed foot.
Calcaneofibular Ligament Injury: The calcaneofibular ligament is usually damaged in injuries or road traffic accidents. The treatment modalities revolve around rest, rehabilitation and pain management.
Talofibular Ligament Injury: The ligamentous band that connects the talus of the foot to the fibula is referred to as the talofibular ligament. The prevalence of talo-fibular ligament is fairly high (3600 cases are reported per 100,000 of the population).
