RSI Wrist

Repetitive Strain Injury or Repetitive Stress Injury or RSI is a general term for a number of injuries that occur due to repetitious activity. It can happen in many areas, such as elbow, forearm, neck and shoulders, and it is very common in hands and wrists. 

Definition of RSI Wrist 

RSI of the wrist is a gradual build-up of damage to muscles, tendons and nerves in the wrist due to repetitive motions. It can be linked to injuries such as tendonitis, trigger finger and carpal tunnel syndrome.

Signs and Symptoms of RSI Wrist

The signs and symptoms will depend on the type of injury. Common signs and symptoms are:

  • pain
  • tingling or numbness
  • weakness
  • stiffness
  • tenderness
  • sensitivity to cold and heat
  • swelling

Causes of RSI Wrist

Some activities that can increase your risk for RSI are:

  • stressing the same muscles through repetition
  • maintaining the same posture for long periods of time
  • maintaining an abnormal posture for an extended period of time, such as holding your arms over your head
  • lifting heavy objects
  • being in poor physical condition or not exercising enough

Previous injuries or conditions, such as a rotator cuff tear or an injury to your wrist, back, or shoulder, can also predispose you to RSI.

Certain occupations can pose as risk factors, including desk and computer workers, construction workers, dental hygienists, cooks and cleaners.
