Ganglion Cyst

Ganglion Cysts or Bible Cysts are common, benign masses that sometimes grow on the hand and wrist.

Definition of Ganglion Cyst

A Ganglion Cyst is a fluid-filled sac that appears on the hand and wrist that usually present as bumps at the base of the fingers, near the palm; the back of the wrist; the fingertips (also called mucous cysts) and the front of the wrist. Most ganglion cysts do not need treatment, and disappear over time.

Signs and Symptoms of Ganglion Cyst

People with a Ganglion Cyst will sometimes experience pain and discomfort. However, the size of the Ganglion Cyst will not predict the amount of pain a person may experience from the cyst.

If the Ganglion Cyst is putting pressure on a nerve, then the patient may also experience tingling and muscle weakness.

Causes of Ganglion Cyst

While there are a few theories on how a Ganglion Cyst can form, the actual cause is not known. The main theories include trauma and/or injury to the wrist, or having some flaw in the joint capsule or tendon sheath that allows the fluid to bulge out.

Women are more likely to develop Ganglion Cysts, as well as those who are between 20-50years. Those with arthritis are more likely to develop Ganglion Cysts at the fingertips, and gymnasts are also more prone to develop Ganglion Cysts, which leads to the theory that the cause of Ganglion Cysts are linked to repetitive strain or stress.
