Dupuytren's Contracture

Dupuytren’s Contracture, aka Dupuytren’s Disease, is a benign, progressive disease of the palmar fascia in the hand. As the tendons thicken, it can cause fingers to be pulled inward towards the palm.

Definition of Dupuytren's Contracture

Dupuytren's contracture is a progressive musculoskeletal deformity of the hand that can greatly compromise the physical, psycho-social and personal aspects of an individual’s life.  The condition usually develops over a course of several years and is marked by thickening or fibrosis of certain tendons and muscles under the palmar skin of the hand.

Signs and Symptoms of Dupuytren's Contracture

Due to fibrosis or thickening of the tendons, the finger motion and activity is generally compromised. Dupuytren's contracture most frequently affects the tendons of ring finger and little finger; thereby complicating simple activities like:

  • Shaking hands
  • Putting on gloves
  • Inability to perform fine motor functions by the hands

Causes of Dupuytren's Contracture

The primary pathophysiology that leads to the formation of Dupuytren's contractures is not properly understood, but experts believe that autoimmune activity is primarily responsible. Certain risk factors that may aggravate the risk of developing Dupuytren's contracture are; advancing age, poorly controlled diabetes, positive family history and chronic alcohol/ tobacco abuse.
