Signs and Symptoms of Pregnancy Lower Back Pain

Lumbar pain during pregnancy is generally located at and above the waist in the center of the back, and it may be concurrent with pain that radiates into the woman's leg or foot.

Posterior pelvic pain (in the back of the pelvis) is four times more prevalent than lumbar pain in pregnancy. It is a deep pain felt below the waistline, on one or both sides or across the tailbone.

Causes of Pregnancy Lower Back Pain

Causes of Pregnancy Lower Back Pain can mainly depend on which stage of the pregnancy you are in.

In the first/early stage of pregnancy, causes of Pregnancy Lower Back Pain are:

  • Hormone increase - during early pregnancy, hormones start to be released to soften and loosen the ligements and joints in the pelvis, to ready the body for the delivery of the baby. These hormones, however, are released throughout the whole body, and this loosening and softening of all the joints can affect the lower back , leading to aches and pains
  • Stress - this can be a contributor to back pain, pregnant or not. However, if the hormones are already affecting your joints and ligaments, some stress can put extra pressure and cause back pain

In the second and third trimester of pregnancy, causes of Pregnancy Lower Back Pain include:

  • Posture Changes - pregnancy will shift the centre of gravity of the body. This can lead to changes in posture and movement. Poor posture, standing for too long, and bending over can lead to lower back pain.
  • Weight Gain - during a healthy pregnancy, women will gain weight. The spine then needs to support the increased weight, which can cause lower back pain. The weight of the growing foetus and uterus can also put pressure on blood vessels and nerves in the pelvis and back.
  • Muscle Separation - As the uterus expands, two parallel sheets of muscles (the rectus abdominis muscles or six-pack muscles), which run from the rib cage to the pubic bone, may separate along the centre seam. This separation may worsen back pain.
