Lower Back Muscle Spasms

Lower Back Muscle Spasms, also known as back muscle pain, pulled back muscle, back muscle strain, lumbar sprain or strain, torn back muscle or muscular back pain, is a widespread problem. It is the most common type of back pain; however, it is treatable and can be the quickest to heal.

What are Lower Back Muscle Spasms?

The lower back has a number of different muscles that help us with posture and stability. Some of these muscles are the Quadratus Lumborum, the Multifidus muscle and the Erector Spinae muscles. As muscles that are constantly used day-to-day, these muscles can also be strained due to overuse or injury.

Signs and Symptoms of Lower Back Muscle Spasms

The severity of Lower Back Muscle Spasms can vary from a mild ache to a sudden debilitating back pain. Common signs and symptoms of Lower Back Muscle Spasms include:

  • your back hurting more with movement, less when still
  • localised back pain
  • muscle cramps or spasms
  • back muscle tenderness
  • protective back stiffness
  • trouble walking or bending, or standing straight
  • sudden pain onset

Causes of Lower Back Muscle Spasms

There are many causes of Lower Back Muscle Spasms; most of them can fall into one of the following three categories:

  • Back Muscle Strains: this is the most common cause of Lower Back Muscle Spasms. This can occur from muscle fatigue, excessive loads, or poor lifting or sitting postures. Inefficient, weak, or back muscles that lack endurance or normal contraction timing can lead to reduced joint stabilisation and subsequent injury to your back muscles, ligaments, joints or even spinal discs.
  • Poor Posture: this can place unnecessary stress onto your spine when sitting, standing or lifting. With muscle fatigue or overstretching, your ligaments and discs can stretch, which puts spinal joint muscles and nerves under pain-causing pressure or strain that results in back pain.
  • Ligament Strains: stretching ligaments too far can cause them to tear, resulting in subsequent bleeding into the surrounding tissue, producing swelling, muscular spasms and pain.
