Lumbar Spondylosis (Arthritis)

Lumbar Spondylosis (arthritis), also known as lumbar spine arthritis or lumbar spine osteoarthritis, is a condition that occurs commonly in people over 60 years of age.

What is Lumbar Spondylosis (Arthritis)?

Spondylosis describes osteoarthritis of the spine, or the general degeneration of the spine that can occur in joints, discs, and bones of the spine as we age. For Lumbar Spondylosis (Arthritis), the joints, discs and bones affected are in the lower back.

Signs and Symptoms of Lumbar Spondylosis (Arthritis)

Symptoms of Lumbar Spondylosis (Arthritis) include:

  • lumbar joint pain or tenderness that intermittently returns
  • stiffness in lower back, particularly after periods of inactivity
  • spinal joint deformity (seen on x-ray)
  • limited motion in affected joints

Causes of Lumbar Spondylosis (Arthritis)

While Lumbar Spondylosis (Arthritis) is often associated with aging, certain genetic predispositions, and injuries may increase a person’s risk of developing spinal osteoarthritis. Aside from normal wear and tear and specific autoimmune triggers, in many cases of Lumbar Spondylosis (Arthritis), the cause remains unknown.

Some common risk factors are:

  • Age
  • Being overweight or obese
  • Sedentary lifestyle with little or no exercise
  • Smoking
  • Having certain conditions like diabetes, gout, psoriasis, tuberculosis, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and Lyme disease
  • Overuse, high-impact activities, and repeat occupational trauma
