Lumbar Spinal Stenosis
Lumbar Spinal Stenosis is a common cause of lower back and leg pain.
What is Lumbar Spinal Stenosis?
Lumbar Spinal Stenosis is the narrowing of either the spinal canal, where the spinal cord travels through the vertebrae, or the spinal foramen openings, where the peripheral nerves leave the spine and go to other parts of the body. This can cause either the nerves or the spinal column to be compressed, producing pain and neurological symptoms.

Causes of Lumbar Spinal Stenosis
There are many causes of Lumbar Spinal Stenosis. These include:
- Bone overgrowth/arthritic spurs - This is the main cause of Lumbar Spinal Stenosis. Lumbar Spondylosis (Spinal Osteoarthritis) can break down the cartilage in the joints. As the cartilage wears away, the bones can rub against each other and form bone spurs or new bone growth. This can narrow the spinal canal or spinal foramen, and start compressing the nerves. Paget's disease is another condition where bone growth can occur
- Bulging disc/Herniated disc
- Thickened ligaments
- Spinal cord fractures and injuries
- Spinal cord cysts or tumors
- Congenital Spinal Stenosis
