Wrist Arthritis
Arthritis refers to the inflammation of the adjoining surfaces of the articulating bones. Osteoarthritis of wrist joint is mainly due to physiological aging or age related wear and tear changes of the bones that forms the wrist joint.
What is Wrist Arthritis?
There are four types of arthritis that can affect the wrist. These are:
- Osteoarthritis – wearing down of cartilage and bone due to age
- Rheumatoid arthritis – an autoimmune disease which causes the body to attack its own tissues
- Psoriatic arthritis – an inflammatory skin and joint disease
- Post-traumatic arthritis – occurs after an injury to the wrist
These types of arthritis can also affect the joints and bones of your hand, and can be painful.

Causes of Wrist Arthritis
Certain risk factors can make up more vulnerable to develop premature wrist arthritis (prior to 50 years of age). These include; certain occupational activities that require frequent repetitive motion at the level of wrist joint such as typing, plumbing etc.), family or personal history of osteoarthritis and hereditary or genetic factors. In addition, if you have osteoarthritis of other major joints of the body, you are more vulnerable to develop early wrist arthritis changes.
