Shoulder Instability/Laxity

While for many people, having loose joints is not a medical issue, in others, it can cause pain and other problems.

What is Shoulder Instability/Laxity?

Shoulder instability and laxity refers to a multitude of musculoskeletal ailments that significantly restricts the activity or motion at the shoulder joint.  It includes varying degrees of dislocation, laxity and subluxation of the shoulder joint that is often associated with nerve damage of the glenohumeral area.

Signs and Symptoms of Shoulder Instability/Laxity

In most cases, shoulder instability/laxity presents with these sign and symptoms:

  • Pain, numbness and tingling
  • Fatigue
  • Muscle spasms
  • ‘Clicking’ or ‘cracking’ of joints
  • Hypermobility

Shoulder instability/laxity can also lead to recurrent injuries and/or joint dislocations.

Causes of Shoulder Instability/Laxity

Shoulder Instability & Laxity is often a result of ligamentous tear (especially ligaments that support shoulder joint), stress and strain of shoulder joint (due to strenuous activity or abuse of muscles) and significant damage to the shoulder cartilage.

Certain risk factors can increase your chances of developing this condition, such as previous history of surgery or injury at the level of shoulder joint, active involvement in sports (or dynamic lifestyle) and connective tissue disorders (congenital or acquired deficits in the repair or remodeling of collagen and other connective tissue elements).

Genetic conditions that can affect shoulder instability/laxity include hypermobility syndrome, Down Syndrome, Marfan Syndrome, Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome and Osteogenesis Imperfecta. Non-genetic conditions can include bony dysplasia and osteoarthritis.
