Bankart Lesion
The socket of the shoulder, or glenoid, is covered in a cartilage called the labrum that cushions the bone and helps stabilize the joint. If the labrum is pulled off the front of the socket, it forms a Bankart lesion.
Definition of Bankart Lesion
A Bankart lesion is an injury to the anterior part of the glenoid labrum of the shoulder. There are two different types of Bankart lesions - bony and soft tissue.
A soft tissue Bankart lesion are more common, and occurs when there is a tear or lesion at the glenoid rim, where the posterior capsule is stretched, and the inferior glenohumeral ligament is torn.
A bony Bankart lesion also has, as well as the soft tissue damage, a fracture of the anteroinferior glenoid rim.
