Trigger Points

Ever had someone prod you in a surprising sensitive spot, such as the top of your shoulder? And possibly even had pain occur elsewhere in the body? The pain could be due to Trigger Points.

What are Trigger Points?

Trigger points are hyperirritable spots, palpable nodules in the taut bands of the skeletal muscles' fascia. Trigger points develop in the myofascia, mainly in the center of a muscle belly where the motor endplate enters. These palpable nodules occur within the tight muscle at the size of 2-10 mm and can be present at different places in any skeletal muscles of the body.

Signs and Symptoms of Trigger Points

Symptoms of Trigger Points can include:

  • deep pain in localized areas of muscles
  • pain that gets worse when the affected muscle is stretched or strained
  • muscle pain that gets worse or fails to improve with time
  • presence of painful knots in muscles that when pressed produce intense localized or referred pain
  • muscles that are weak, stiff, inflexible, or have reduced range of motion
  • mood or sleep disturbances

Causes of Trigger Points

We all have Trigger Points in the body, but their presence does not necessarily result in the formation of pain syndrome. When it happens, Trigger Points are directly associated with Myofascial Pain Syndrome, somatic dysfunction, psychological disturbance and restricted daily functioning.

Some causes of Trigger Points can include:

  • Ageing
  • Injury sustained by a fall, by stress or birth trauma.
  • Lack of exercise
  • Bad posture - upper and lower crossed pattern, swayback posture, telephone posture, cross-legged sitting
  • Muscle overuse and respective micro-trauma - e.g. weightlifting
  • Chronic stress condition - anxiety, depression, psychological stress trauma
  • Vitamin deficiencies - vitamin C, D, B; folic acid; iron;
  • Sleep disturbance
  • Joint problems and hypermobility.
