Strains

A strain is an injury to a muscle and/or tendon. Tendons are fibrous cords of tissue that attach muscles to bone. Strains often occur in the back or leg (typically, the hamstring).

What are Strains?

Along with the bones, many muscles are present in a joint complex that serves to support the bones for added strength and stability. Every major joint of the body is stabilized with the help of an antagonist group of muscles. For example, the hip joint is supported by muscles that extend from abdomen to the pelvic and thigh region. Injury to these muscle fibers may results in Strains and compromised joint activity.

Depending up on the injury, Strains can also be classified as mild, moderate and severe.

Signs and Symptoms of Strains

Classic presentation of Strains are characteristic for symptoms like

  • Swelling
  • Loss of muscle tone and strength
  • Pain when the muscle is used
  • Pain when the surrounding area is stretched
  • Persistent pain with difficulty in moving
  • Cramping

Causes of Strains

Primary pathophysiological events that can lead to Strains are: 

  • overstretching of muscles due to activity or injury
  • history of fall from a height
  • direct blow over the respected muscle, also called as contusion.

Some risk factors that may increase your risk of experiencing strains are physiological aging, history of a previous injuries to the muscle or surrounding connective tissue framework and over-training/ or exercise. Males are more prone to develop Strains, and certain sports have a higher incidence of Strains, such as Soccer, football, hockey, boxing, wrestling and other contact sports.
