Sprains

Our body has some special types of connective tissue components (such as ligaments) for the purpose of supporting or stabilizing the articulating bones. Tearing or damage to these ligaments and surrounding tissues can lead to Sprains

What are Sprains?

A sprain is a stretch and/or tear of a ligament, a strong band of connective tissue that connects the end of one bone with another. Ligaments stabilize and support the body's joints. The areas of the body that are most vulnerable to sprains are the ankles, knees, and wrists. 

Sprains are classified by severity:

  • Grade 1 sprain (mild):  Slight stretching and some damage to the fibers of the ligament.
  • Grade 2 sprain (moderate):  Partial tearing of the ligament. There is abnormal looseness (laxity) in the joint when it is moved in certain ways.
  • Grade 3 sprain (severe):  Complete tear of the ligament. This may cause significant instability.

Signs and Symptoms of Sprains

Ligamentous sprain usually presents as

  • tenderness
  • appearance of visible bruising
  • swelling
  • pain on activity or movement

Causes of Sprains

A sprain may result from a minor injury or from a complete tear. Some common causative agents may present as:

  • Forceful hit or rub from a hard surface
  • Fall from height
  • Accidents and traumas
  • Contusion
  • Overstretching of ligaments
  • Inappropriate posture

Prior history of injury, repetitive injury, and poor posture increases the risk of muscular or ligamentous sprains.
