Cervical Disc Injury

A Cervical Disc Injury is an injury that is done to the intevertebral disc in the neck. There are two main types of Cervical Disc Injuries - Bulging Disc, and Ruptured or Herniated Disc.

What is Cervical Disc Injury?

Between each vertebra in our spine is a structure called a disc. This disc is like a jelly-filled donut with a liquid-type material in the middle called the nucleus pulposus. When injured, the outer rim (annulus fibrosis) of the disc can weaken, and the nucleus can press outwards on the weakened disc wall, causing your disc to bulge outwards. If the outer rim tears, this can allow the liquid-type nucleus material to escape and results in low back pain.

There are several stages to this injury and it first begins as a disc bulge/disc protrusion.  With further degeneration, it can progress to become a disc herniation, and eventually a disc extrusion and sequestration.

Signs and Symptoms of Cervical Disc Injury

Cervical disc injuries are a common cause of mechanical neck pain. The pain may be localised to the neck but can also be accompanied with arm pain, numbness, or even weakness.

In all stages, patients may feel symptoms in their arms (pain, tingling, burning, weakness) as a result of compression on the nerve root from the disc itself. In the disc extrusion and sequestration stages, there is increased inflammation in the area and can add further compression on the nerve roots; this can further amplify the arm symptoms mentioned above.

Causes of Cervical Disc Injury

Damage to a cervical disc can result from wear-and-tear (such as Osteoarthritis) or trauma.
