What is Jaw Pain – TMJ Dysfunction?
The temporomandibular joint is classified as a hinge joint that is formed between the mandibular bone (lower jaw bone) and the temples (temporal bone of skull). The positioning and physiology of this joint helps in maintaining normal day to day functions such as eating, chewing, biting, talking and yawning etc. Any disease process that affects the activity or functioning of this joint is collectively referred to as TMJ or Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction.
